Eimer1171. This is a large (60mm) King George IV silver Medal by Benedetto Pistrucci struck in 1824. Not much is known about it but it is widely believed it was commissioned to help promote the uprising of the Greek resistance against the invading Turks which begun in 1821. It is thought it was particularly intended at the Greek Naval efforts in which Greek fighters fruitfully set the Turkish fleet ablaze in the port of Nafplion. Obverse bears the portrait of the King with the legends in Greek "ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Δ ΜΕΓ. ΒΡΕΤ. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ" with "ΠΙΣΤΡΥΚΚΙ ΑΥΤΟΠΤΗΣ ΕΠΟΙΕΙ" below ("GEORGE IV KING OF GR.BRIT.","PISTRUCCI ENGRAVER"). Reverse the Trident, symbol of the Greek mythology God of the seas Poseidon, dolphins right and left,ΑΩΚΔ(1824) below, possibly relating to the aforementioned Naval effort. A masterpiece of the famous Italian engraver whose work graces the reverse of the most famous Gold coin of all times, the Sovereign to this day. Rare in Silver, colorful patina, unpriced in BUNC.
